Torre de los Ingleses (The English Tower)

Clock tower of Torre de los Ingleses in Buenos Aires.

About

El Torre Monumental (The Monumental Tower), more widely known to locals as El Torre de los Ingleses (The English Tower), was donated to Argentina by the British Community of Buenos Aires in the early 20th century. The tower stands at 60 meters tall and was inaugurated in 1916 to commemorate the May Revolution Centennial. Both inside and outside the tower, there are numerous emblems and carvings representing both Britain and Argentina. At the top is an English Opaline Clock, which usually shows the correct time. Due to its close location to Retiro Train Station and the main Port Area, El Torre de los Ingleses has historically been referred to as the entrance to Buenos Aires.

Why Visit Torre de los Ingleses?

Not only is El Torre de los Ingleses a historical landmark, but it also offers a scenic view of the Buenos Aires skyline and the Rio de la Plata. The tower is open for visits all week but is closed on Tuesdays and public holidays. Opening times are 11am to 6pm and a small admission fee is required. More information can be found on the city website. Opposite the tower you will also find Plaza San Martin and War Memorial.

Did You Know?

Due to the Falklands War in 1982, the tower had its name changed from The English Tower to the Monumental Tower. However, most locals still refer to it by its old name. The plaza where the tower stands used to be called Plaza Británica but was also renamed to Plaza Fuerza Aérea Argentina
