La Reserva Ecológica
About
Bordering the Rio de la Plata and just a 10-minute walk from downtown, La Reserva Ecológica is one of Buenos Aires' most popular open spaces. The reserve was formed from landfill created by the debris of buildings demolished in the 1970s to make way for highway construction. Over time, sand and sediment built up, creating perfect conditions for a native ecosystem to develop. Today, lush trees and willow growth thrive throughout the reserve.
La Reserva Ecológica was declared a natural park in the 1980s and now boasts a variety of wildlife, from flamingos to iguanas.
Why Visit La Reserva Ecológica?
La Reserva Ecológica is a relaxed getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city without having to venture far from downtown. The reserve features numerous interconnecting pathways that allow you to explore the area on foot or by bike. It is also a popular spot for running and bird watching. Near the river, there are picnic tables and grassy banks to enjoy.
Entrance to La Reserva Ecológica is free and open Tuesday to Sunday from 8:00am to 8:00pm. Tours and night night tours are available on certain days. You can visit the Reserva Ecologica's webpage for more information.
The reserve also offers visitors a unique view of the city of Buenos Aires, and the tall buildings of Puerto Madero in the distance.
Outside the reserve is a large pedestrian path lined with BBQ take-away stands, a great place to enjoy a local steak sandwich or choripán. On weekends, the area is buzzing with street performers and market stalls selling a variety of handcrafts.

In Spanish, the word 'Plata' means 'Silver', and 'Rio de la Plata' translates to Silver River. The river got this name due to its color, which resembles that of silver.
