About

Only a stone's throw from the City Center of Buenos Aires is the picturesque and trendy port area of Puerto Madero. Named after Eduardo Madero, who oversaw its creation, Puerto Madero was constructed at the end of the 18th century. It enjoyed a brief period as the main port of Buenos Aires, but the introduction of larger cargo ships at the turn of the century required a new port to be built to accommodate these new giants of the seas. This led to a decline in the use of Puerto Madero, and it was eventually left abandoned and derelict for the best part of a century.

That changed in the 1990s when a regeneration project began. Tall, shiny new glass tower blocks now overlook the old warehouses, which have been refurbished and converted into fashionable offices, apartments, and restaurants. One warehouse has even been converted into a university. This mix of historical and modern architecture has made real estate in Puerto Madero highly sought after.

Considering its close proximity to Downtown, Puerto Madero is surprisingly quiet and offers a slower pace of life with a relaxed atmosphere. The port's past prosperity is still evident today in the refurbished warehouses spread along the west dock. The old port cranes used to load and unload ships still stand proudly, watching over the original boat cleats spread around the docks.

Puerto Madero is very pedestrian-friendly and is a great place to take a stroll or bike ride while admiring the yachts docked, architecture, and everyday life of the port. La Puente de Mujer Pedestrian Bridge is an iconic landmark of Buenos Aires and located in Puerto Madero. There are several places of interest within the Puerto Madero area, including La Reserva Ecologica, Parque Micaela Bastidas, the classic Naval Frigate Presidente Sarmiento, and the Casino Puerto Madero, part of which is on a vintage paddle steam ship. There is a wide variety of restaurants to choose from, offering everything from classic Argentinean Parilla to Tex Mex cuisine. Puerto Madero is equally beautiful and picturesque at night.

Puerto Madero is also home to exclusive hotels such as the Faena Hotel and Hilton Hotel, which are favored by many well-known Hollywood and pop stars when they are in town. The area offers a variety of cinemas and restaurants catering to all tastes, many of which offer premium Argentine wines.

Paseo de la Gloria (Walk of Glory) is an outdoor hall of fame located along La Costanera Sur, opposite La Reserva. It honors Argentina's biggest sporting heroes like racing driver Juan Manuel Fangio, basketball legend Manu Ginóbili, and tennis stars Gabriela Sabatini and Guillermo Vilas. Lionel Messi had a statue, but half of it was sawn off and stolen.

The neighborhood's location is convenient for travelers, being in close proximity to major transportation hubs like the Tienda León shuttle bus terminal, which provides service to both Ezeiza International Airport and Jorge Newbery Aeroparque. The neighborhood is about a 45-minute taxi ride to Ezeiza International Airport and a 20-minute taxi ride to Jorge Newbery Aeroparque. Additionally, the ferry ports operated by Buquebus and Colonia Express are nearby, offering easy access to getting to Uruguay from Buenos Aires. Sturla Viajes operates day trips by boat to the Tigre Delta and to La Isla Martín García (Martín García Island) from Puerto Madero.
