El Obelisco (The Obelisk) was erected in 1936 to commemorate the creation of the city. It is built on the site where the national flag was flown for the first time. The Obelisco is located in the Plaza de la República, right at the intersection of Avenida 9 de Julio and Avenida Corrientes.

Why Visit the Obelisco?
The plaza around the Obelisco is often used for cultural events and by government agencies raising awareness on various issues. The Obelisk at night is an impressive sight, illuminated and surrounded by buildings with bright neon billboards. It is also conveniently located near the theaters along Avenida Corrientes. Not far from is the world renowned Teatro Colon.
In October 2024 work started on installing a lift and internal panoramic viewing platform, which will be open to visitors by Spring 2025. This new feature is expected to make El Obelisco one of Buenos Aires' main attractions to visit.
