Floralis Genérica
About
La Floralis Generica is a giant metallic sculpture in the form of a flower, located in Plaza Naciones Unidas near Recoleta, Buenos Aires. Installed in 2001, it was donated by local architect Eduardo Catalano and has quickly become a well-known modern landmark of Buenos Aires, often featured in Floralis Generica photos on postcards and in guidebooks.
La Floralis Generica is approximately 20 meters in height and has six metallic petals made of stainless steel and aluminum. The sculpture is surrounded by a large cascading water fountain, enhancing its aesthetic appeal. It is fitted with a complex system that allows the petals to open and close, mimicking a real flower's movements under sunlight. At night, the petals close, and they reopen every morning, adjusting to the time of day.
The sculpture is also known by various names among locals, such as 'Flor Metallica' and 'Escultura de la Flor'.
