Interior of El Ateneo Grand Splendid Bookshop, Buenos Aires

About

El Ateneo is a large bookshop, located along Avenida Santa Fe in the Barrio Norte neighbourhood of Buenos Aires. It is one of the most spectacular bookstores you are likely to stumble across. The building was once a theatre called 'El Teatro Grand Splendid' in the early part of the 20th century. Also referred to as el ateneo grand splendid bookstore, during its early years, many well-known tango entertainers graced the theatre, including Carlos Gardel. With the rise in the popularity of film, the theatre was converted into a movie theatre. At the turn of the new millennium, the cinema was renovated and transformed into what we know today as El Ateneo Bookstore.
