Congreso de la Nación Argentina
About
El Palacio del Congreso (The Palace of Congress) is the seat of Argentina's National Senate. Situated at the end of Avenida de Mayo, it is one of the most imposing buildings in Buenos Aires. The construction took 10 years, opening its doors in 1906. The noticeable green dome of the palace, modeled after Washington’s Capitol building, cost more than twice the original budget. The building overlooks Plaza Congreso Buenos Aires, which features two large impressive fountains known as 'Los Dos Congresos'.
Why Visit El Palacio del Congreso?
The Senate offers free guided tours of the National Congress Palace, with prior reservation, to learn about the functioning of the Legislative Power and the architecture, history, and unique features of the Palace and its rooms. The entrance for the tour is on the Hipólito Yrigoyen Street side of the Congress building. You need to bring ID, such as a passport, and wearing flip-flops and shorts is not generally permitted.
The tour lasts approximately 60 minutes and is accessible to people with disabilities. It includes the main rooms of the Palace and the chambers of both houses.
If you haven't made a reservation, you can show up and enter on a first-come, first-served basis until capacity is reached.
Please consult the official website about times and reserving a place on a tour on the official website.
Please note that the tour may vary or be suspended without prior notice, depending on parliamentary activity.
El Congreso Buenos Aires is very central and close to downtown. Even just seeing 'El Palacio del Congreso' from the outside is impressive. Plaza Congreso Buenos Aires is a nice place to sit and relax on one of the many benches. There is also a small children's entertainment area with carousels, and on weekends, market stalls are set up to sell crafts and CDs.
Within walking distance and a recommended place to visit is the Palacio Barolo. This historic building has a lighthouse at the top where you can get panoramic views over Buenos Aires.
