About

La Catedral Metropolitana, also known as the Metropolitan Cathedral Buenos Aires, is Buenos Aires' most important Catholic Church and overlooks Plaza de Mayo in Downtown Buenos Aires. There have been up to six churches built on the site before the current cathedral took shape back in the 1700s. La Catedral Metropolitana boasts a mix of 18th and 19th-century neo-classical architecture, along with many religious sculptures, artworks, and altars.

Historical Significance

The Metropolitan Cathedral Buenos Aires is famed for housing the remains of General José de San Martín, the liberator of Argentina, Chile, and Peru. His mausoleum in the cathedral is guarded by Grenadier guards during the day.

Additionally, the cathedral is where Pope Francis, before becoming the Pope, celebrated many occasions. He used to travel to the Metropolitan Cathedral Buenos Aires on the Linea A subway line from the neighborhood where he lived in Flores. His connection to the cathedral adds to its historical and spiritual significance, making it a notable landmark in Buenos Aires.
