About

El Museo Histórico Nacional del Cabildo y de la Revolución de Mayo (National Museum of the Cabildo and the May Revolution) is housed in one of the oldest and most historic buildings in Argentina, El Cabildo Buenos Aires.

Overlooking Plaza de Mayo and next to Avenida de Mayo, the history of the Cabildo site dates back to 1610. The building was the main government institution from the early years of Buenos Aires’ growth in the 1500s through to the early 1800s. It was the seat of the May Revolution of 1810, where the authority of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata was ended and replaced with the first joint government.

Over the years, the building has undergone many modifications, but reconstruction brought out its traditional colonial architecture. El Cabildo Buenos Aires has been declared a building of historical importance.
