Who was Carlos Gardel? Carlos Gardel is one of Tango's most iconic figures, known for his singing and many popular Tango compositions, including the famous "Por Una Cabeza." One of the best places to learn about his life and achievements is El Museo Casa Carlos Gardel (The Carlos Gardel House Museum).

The museum is located in the house where Carlos Gardel once lived, at 735 Jean Jaurés Street in the Abasto area. Gardel bought the house in 1927 and lived there until 1933. Over the years, the house changed ownership and was once a popular Tango venue. It was eventually donated to the City of Buenos Aires, which renovated the building and opened the Carlos Gardel House Museum in 2003.

Did You Know?

Carlos Gardel died on June 24, 1935, in a plane crash in Colombia. Huge crowds lined Gardel's funeral cortege, which went from Luna Park in downtown Buenos Aires all the way to Chacarita Cemetery. You can visit his final resting place today in Chacarita Cemetery, Buenos Aires. Many fans place a cigarette between the fingers of Carlos Gardel's statue that stands there.
