Named after the day on which Argentina gained its independence, Avenida 9 de Julio (Avenue 9th of July) is said to be the widest avenue in the world. It stretches over 140 meters, covering nearly 20 lanes, and can take the average pedestrian about 5 minutes to cross. The Avenue 9 de Julio slices through the center of downtown, running from the southern district near La Boca to Retiro at the northern end. The original construction of the avenue was completed in 1937 and is said to have been inspired by the Avenue des Champs-Élysées in Paris.
